We are quite fortunate in Canada and Quebec to have toys or packaging made exclusively for our market. The LEGO UNICEF #106 is one such example. It consists of 54 pieces, including a UNICEF Truck, a mini-figure, a shovel, and a walkie-talkie.
It comes in a bilingual Canadian box with a bilingual instruction booklet and an advertising sheet for UNICEF Canada.
Produced in 1985 for the Samsonite company, originally, 300 Lego #106 sets were given across Canada to reward the efforts of volunteers in the 1985 UNICEF fundraising campaign.
It is also recognized that a few copies were sold exclusively at some of the then Toys “R” Us stores in Canada. Indeed, according to Wikipedia, Toys “R” Us Canada opened its first store in Canada in 1984. It can be assumed that in 1985, only a few stores were open. It also seems that it was possible to order copies directly from UNICEF Canada. Needless to say, only a few sets have survived.
This set is considered one of the most expensive LEGO sets, piece by piece, of all time.
